In my opinion Glen Shiel is one of the finest and most underrated glens in the Scottish Highlands. The valley is enclosed by steep mountain slopes on all sides and at its western end, demanding and certainly deserving of one’s attention, is the shapely cone of Faochag and the impressive and challenging rocky ridges of The Saddle. At this viewpoint, the River Shiel crosses a bed of alluvial gravel before descending a series of cascades to reach the tiny and secretive Loch Shiel. This image was captured during the middle of October when the mountain slopes were resplendent in the golden colours of a Highland autumn.
