About This Image ...

The Five Sisters of Kintail is an unbroken ridge of mountains north-west of Glen Shiel and overlooking Loch Duich and the villages of Morvich and Ratagan. The view of the Five Sisters is one of the most iconic images of the Scottish Highlands, the mountains dominating the skyline when seen from the south shore of Loch Duich near the village of Ratagan.

I make no apology for being a regular visitor to this location as it encapsulates all the elements one expects of a west coast Highland landscape. However, to capture a pleasing image all these elements need to come together – including the state of the tide. Often by the time the light is right on the mountains it is often lost from the foreground. So more times than not it is a case of making the best of whatever opportunity arises when a window of good weather arrives. The quality of the light and the state of the tide is what makes or breaks an image here; on this occasion a small ridge of high pressure sat briefly over the north west and I decided to go for it.

Furthermore, snow rarely lingers on the Five Sisters of Kintail and other mountains of the western seaboard, so when a heavy overnight fall was followed by a brilliantly clear and perfectly still morning I had no hesitation in heading west the forty miles to the village of Ratagan on Loch Duich. It was indeed fortunate that my arrival coincided with a flood tide, the waters of which provided a perfect reflection of this wonderful scene.
