About The Image

Glen Loyne in Winter
Loch Loyne and the overlooked by the mountains of Knoydart in full winter raiment.

I love this viewpoint; it is the closest and most easily accessible of the major mountains to my home. It is a view of a very wild and remote area from a very accessible one; the mountains of Spidean Mialach and Gleouraich which are part of the East Glenquoich Forest are left of centre, Creag a’Mhaim and Druim Shionnach, the most easterly summits of the South Glen Shiel Ridge are to the right. They encircle the lovely Loch Loyne. This mountain view is not only a superb subject at sunset but it also offers some stunning light in winter at sunrise, or just after, as this image demonstrates.

Upon my arrival at this location the peaks were already well illuminated by the low winter sun against the approaching cloud and with blue sky above and I had to work quickly as cloud was slowly building over the more westerly summits. The increasingly dominating foreground stands of conifer necessitated the use of a telephoto lens to eliminate them from the composition which then immediately lended itself to an image of panoramic format. The final image of Glen Loyne in Winter was therefore constructed from a series of five overlapping exposures.
