About This Image ...

There can be few walkers, climbers and photographers who will not be impressed by the sheer magnificence of the North Face of Ben Nevis when approaching it along the banks of the Allt a’Mhuilinn burn. This was a typical winter’s morning on Ben Nevis and the temperatures even at this viewpoint at just under 2,000 feet, just a short distance from the Charles Inglis Clark Memorial Hut at the very foot of the face, were down to -6C. The issue with photographing the face from this location in winter is the direction of the main source of light. Inevitably all the features of the mountain are in shadow, and things are made more difficult because they are snow-covered and one is shooting almost directly into the sun.

I had left the North Face car park near Torlundy before daylight and made most of the steep ascent to the lip of the corrie of the Allt a’Mhuilinn by torchlight. Time was a constant pressure and the sun was already intruding into the compositions that I had planned much earlier than I had hoped. This final image excluding the sun itself is of the two main features of the face – The North East Buttress and Tower Ridge. On the full-size print, a line of climbers can clearly be seen heading up Tower Gully.
