About This Image ...

Tryfan is probably one of, if not the most recognisable mountain in Snowdonia;  its East Face had fascinated me from the day that I first saw it on a walk around Llyn Ogwen in 1972. It is a rock climbers’ playground, a superb assemblage of buttress and gully which can be explored in some detail if one follows the obvious traverse line across the face known as Heather Terrace.

I had decided that I wanted to capture a much more detailed image of Tryfan’s East Face than those which were readily available from the roadside near Helyg. The obvious viewpoint was going to be somewhere on the adjacent ridge of Braich y Ddeugwm across the other side of Cwm Tryfan. However, the only path shown on the Ordnance Survey was through Cwm Tryfan; it appeared to be indistinct and following this would require me to cross the Nant Gwern y Gof stream of which I had no knowledge. The only alternative that I was left with was therefore to find a way out of Gwen Gof Isaf farm and make my way up Braich y Ddeugwm directly.

There was no path underfoot at all, so I just followed the obvious way up, avoiding any crags or boggy ground. I had just started using the Canon EOS 1Ds digital camera instead of the relatively heavy Fuji GX617 Panoramic, so the load I was carrying was much lighter than I had been used to so I made good progress up the ridge.  I found my ‘perfect location’ about half way up and set up the camera there. The light was excellent, low and directional as it always was early in the morning on a spring day.

The final image captures all the features of the mountain’s East Face in great detail including the earlier mentioned Heather Terrace and the two standing rocks of ‘Adam and Eve’ on the very summit.
