Everest South West Face Sunset

It took several visits to Nepal to finally capture this magnificent view of the South West Face of Everest at sunset. I was leading a climbing expedition in Nepal and we chose to acclimatise in the Everest region and to camp at Gorak Shep, which at that time was not populated by the numerous lodges that exist today.

The team made a late afternoon ascent of Kala Pattar and, despite the bitingly cold wind, we waited on the summit until sunset. We were rewarded with a magnificent display of light and shadow before we finally descended in the dark back to camp.
