Ben Nevis is the monarch of our British mountains and my Ben Nevis Prints collection has been designed to include images that convey the many aspects of the mountain; its rounded western flanks that overlook the town of Fort William and the buttresses and gullies of the mighty and precipitous North Face that is the playground of the rock and ice climber.
Viewed from the Caledonian Canal Basin at Corpach across the shimmering blue waters of Loch Eil, the main impression of Ben Nevis is one of bulk. Due to its dominating altitude the mountain is snow covered for much of the winter and spring and great cornices overhang its many gullies. It is a view very much enhanced in the late afternoon in midwinter as can be seen and appreciated in my print of ‘Ben Nevis in Winter Raiment‘.
However, hidden from the average tourist and overlooking the Allt a’Mhuillin glen are the towering cliffs of the North-East Face, well known to the legion of rock and ice climbers who visit every year. Here is a superb display of buttress, ridge and gully seen at its best from the lofty ridge of neighbouring Carn Mor Dearg (1,220m., 4,012 ft.), joined to the reigning peak of the group by the famous Carn Mor Dearg Arete.
