An image captured from just below the summit ridge of Stac Polliadh in early February. It had been a fairly mild winter with little snow on the summits, the remainder of which was lying on the mountains' northern slopes. The smaller peaks along the western seaboard north of Ullapool were almost clear.
Photographically, the main issue I had here was the direction of the sun which, at this time of year, rises very much to the south producing very flat light on the southern slopes of the peaks that were the subject of my composition. The day therefore necessitated a pre-dawn start from the valley below beside Loch Lurgainn. A clear dawn promised never materialised, and thin cirrus cloud soon filled the eastern horizon producing rather diffused sunlight.
