Everest from The Pang La

The distant view of Everest from the Pang La pass Tibet

This is probably one of the most dramatic images of the Himalaya and is significent because it is the first time that Everest becomes visible during the long approach from Lhasa to the east. This was the first view that the Everest explorers of the 1920's obtained during their first explorative visits to Everest. The view is actually from 40 miles away on the summit of the 5000 metre Pang La Pass. This excellent viewpoint clealy shows the dominance of Everest over the neighbouring peaks and the Tibetan Plateau. The image was captured using a 300mm lens extended to its full length and a section extracted from it to accommodate the panoramic format.
