Liathach from Loch Clair

On Location

Liathach from Loch Clair

On this particular morning I had headed out in hopeful anticipation of some interesting dawn light on the mountains of the far north west of Scotland, but north of Ullapool the cloud was down to sea level accompanied by a roaring easterly gale. So I headed back south towards Torridon but as soon as I left the sunny coastline around Poolewe and Gairloch I was faced with unhelpful mid morning light, white and hazy skies and blanket cloud on the summits.

After a tactical re-think and some refreshment beside Loch Clair I headed up the Coulin Estate road and onto the hill, more in hope than anticipation. Thankfully, at least Liathach seemed prepared to cooperate with playful cloud skirting across its eastern top Stuc a'Choire Dhuibh Bhig.

It turned out to be a day that required patience as passing cloud either covered all the summits or cast lengthy shadows across intervening ground.

What I captured was not what I set out for; I have never considered Liathach looks at its best unless it is illuminated in the morning or evening light of the winter seasons. However this turned out to be a very acceptable image, so a day of 300 miles driving wasn't entirely wasted.
